“I think these numbers are important for several reasons. For one, it makes a difference to see concrete, statistical data. People make assumptions that art-world bias exists, but no one that I encountered was aware of the actual figures. No one had run the numbers! (Yes, the Guerrilla Girls started examining gallery and museum practices in the ’80s, but their work for the last decade or so has focused on museums or art world administrators, not the galleries.) I think doing statistical research, providing objective data that actually quantifies how severe the imbalances are, is a powerful and irrefutable indicator of the conditions in the art world.”
